The end of an era

Early 1999, hunched over a computer in an office in Vasant Kunj, I was trying to figure out how to design a website. I chanced upon a website webmonkey.com.

It was a site run by the developers who were running the website of one of the best magazines in town - wired. littered with funny yet incisive articles, the site soon became a favourite.

i learnt html there. i learnt javascript there. i figured out how to develop sites that could sing and dance. and i made money. thanks to a bunch of guys who put up everything they knew and then some. who shared freely. who answered emails quickly, and happily.

including everything i ever picked up there, this was the most important thing i learnt there – the act of giving knowledge freely, with no insecurity or ego attached.

webmonkey is now dead. after six years online, the site is now officially a part of the internet’s past, my past. it will always serve as a reminder of an exciting time, when everything was new, when everything seemed possible and impossible all at the same time. of a nicer time.

i am already missing it.
