FTP

Now that everything is ready, you want to put your files on the site … FTP is the key!

Your site is located in a directory on the web. This directory is located on your chosen server. To access files on your server, you will need a FTP client. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP client is a software which allows you to access remote files, you can download files (get them to your computer) from your server, make changes to them, test them and upload files (send them to a remote computer) back to your server.

My favourite FTP client is CuteFTP, though FTP Voyager is a close second. To get this software and a whole bunch of other stuff go to www.tucows.com, my favourite place for shareware and freeware on the net.

To access your directory you will have to give your server account details - login name and password along with your url (universal resource locator - geek speak for the name of your site) to the ftp client.

You should have got this information from your server admin. If you haven’t it’s time to get in touch with him. Most free hosts like Geocities and Freeservers have detailed help on how to configure your particular FTP client for use with space on thier servers.
